Redesigned image processing software for health insurance claims.
Context
A major Rhode Island health insurance company developed an application to display and manage scanned claims and other forms for processing by data entry personnel. This application was written in Visual Basic 6. Though originally intended only as a “proof of concept,” it was widely deployed and eventually became “mission critical.” It also began to exceed the capacity of the Windows NT servers and Microsoft Access databases which hosted the server component. The client requested that BCA investigate the prospect of improving the reliability, scalability, and performance of the system.
Solution
BCA upgraded the production environment in the following ways:
- Porting the data layer of the application from Access to DB2
- Migrating the server component to Win 2K Server and COM+
- Adding a new module to enhance security and auditing
- Adding features to improve usability, and fixing existing bugs
