Our client needed an easy-to-use software application that could control an ultra-low flow pump used with a mass spectrometer. They wanted an interface that made it easy to adjust the flow rate, view graphic readout of rates, and identify errors conditions.
Context
When a test protocol is run in a laboratory environment there are often several packages of software running at the same time which compete for the researcher’s attention. Knowing if the equipment is operating correctly can save hours or days of testing time. With this in mind BCA developed software that controls flow rate for a mass spectrometer while alerting the user to any errors and remaining time for disposables.
Solution
The goal for this project was to develop a software interface that was simple to use in a multi task environment.
The final design consists of:
- Icons for software control
- Graphing area with customizable display
- Area to set flow rate
- Instrument status with warning area
- Area to set valve position that shows graphically how valve works
BCA’s user interface team along with our software engineers created what the client viewed as the perfect interface for this application. These items are included on a single screen and utilize drop-downs and entry areas. The final result is an interface that is easy to quickly scan for issues in real time.
BCA continues to enhance existing products and create new designs for this client.
